Emily Henry, RDN, CDCES
Born and raised in Ketchikan, I spent a lot of my childhood adventuring in the woods, beaches, and on the water of Southeast, Alaska. I’m a 4th generation Alaskan and my heart is rooted here.
From my early to mid twenties, I was a deckhand on my dad’s fishing boat. Along with all other deckhand duties, since I was the greenhorn, I had to cook. So I learned how to cook in the small boat galley, usually in a wide stance to hold my balance against the rolling waves. Rice cookers and electric skillets were bungee-corded to the wall. Sometimes extra sweatshirts were tucked into the empty spaces in the fridge and cupboards so nothing would spill in the swells. We’d be at sea anywhere from 1-3 weeks so that meant planning was essential - and it also meant the meals got pretty weird toward the end of a trip as supplies were low. We always had rice and salmon though!
Although I’m “retired” from active fishing, my husband and I now own a boat of our own. I have “town” job as a Registered Dietitian and most importantly, I take care of our 3 little Alaskans.
I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and love of salmon with you.
Come have a seat at my table.
I promise there will not be any waves or bungee cords!
